Kauai Arbor Day Tree Giveaway
This year on Friday, November 1, the Kauai Arbor Day events kick off with the annual Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DLNR DOFAW) plant sale at its Lihue, Pua Loke base yard. The sale begins at 8:00 a.m. and will run until 2:30 p.m. at the arboretum, located near the Department of Water. This year will celebrate DLNR DOFAW’s 45th annual event, since starting in 1968, and will offer common and unique threatened and endangered native plants, as well as popular lei and medicinal plants. Proceeds from this event will help support DOFAW’s Kauai program.
On Saturday, November 2, the annual free tree giveaway will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Kukui Grove in the parking lot behind K-Mart. The event is sponsored by the Kauai Landscaping Industry Council and Garden Island Resource and Conservation & Development, Inc.
There will be over 2,000 free trees and plants at this year’s giveaway. The focus is on native plants, and the giveaway will feature a variety of species, such as: a`ali`i, alahe`e, lama, maile, naupaka, `ohe, and `ōhi`a lehua. Other plants to be given away include Hawaiian `awa, hala, Kauai Beauty ti plants, and pua kenikeni. There will also be free compost available, educational giveaways, and a booth to get questions answered by plant experts.
Saturday’s event will also feature educational booths sponsored by many of the island’s local conservation groups. By “talking story” with these educators, you can earn stamps that will entitle you to additional free trees. Be sure to come early! The event closes when all of the trees have been given away.
